Bleach Stenciled T Shirts

A friend of mine (Hope from the Mom and Tot Shop in Huntsville, TX) showed me a shirt she did with her MOPS (mother of preschoolers) group. They found all kinds of objects to lay on their shirts as the stencil including wall decor, magnets, etc to make designs on thier shirts.  I decided to try it to make personalized shirts for my kids.
Here is how I did it:
Supplies needed are bleach, spray bottle, letters - I used cricut cuttin' up cartridge at 6", t shirts, adhesive spray optional
Next I layed out the letters the way I wanted them to look on the shirt.  I then sprayed alittle adhesive and pressed them on the shirt to keep them from moving since I was using letters cut from cardstock with my cricut.

Now you just spray with bleach using the spray bottle

spray up and let it fall down to the shirt. Let it dry and peel the letters off.
Then I put it on the kiddos!

Here is another picture of my daughter and I wearing a shirt I put a cross on and then embellished with rhinestones but this was my first one and thought I needed to dilute the bleach so it did not turn out as well

I hope you try this out it is fast and easy!!

  6. Super cute idea!! I am going to try this one. I just bought a $2.00 solid shirt from Wal-mart today. God knows I should make this for my son!! I keep on reading about people using a cricut machine. I want one so bad! Would this work as well just cutting out letters from computer paper?? I am saving this one in my favorites!

  7. you don't have to have a cricut or even cut out letters and shapes. i used a wooden cross for my shirt in the bottom picture. I just layed it on the the shirt and sprayed

  52. Hi, this is 2 cute!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!! I have a question though. Somewhere I have heard of this type of projectit states that u need a neutralizer to make the bleach stop acting so that it doesn't eat through the fabric. Do ou have any ideas on what to use to neutralize it? If you have not used any how long has it been since the original project. Trying to find out if I should use a new tshirt or an old one. Thanks for your thoughts and I love the project:*)).

    ReplyDelete
  53. mommyof 2tuties- i used new tshirt for th 2 kids and old shirts with the one with kate and i. i didn't use anything to neutralize it and didn't have any problems with the bleach. i have washed the shirts a couple of times since we took the pictures and still look the same. you could try it on an old t shirt to see how it does. hope that helps, jamee

  65. Thanks for sharing! I am a MOPS coordinator and always looking for new ideas to share with my group. And I think the cross one looks great - love how you offcentered it near the bottom too...my mom just dug out an old bedazzler and passed it along to me...thinking I may have to dust it off and try my hand with it on some shirts.

  66. So you DID NOT dilute your bleach? Maybe that was my problem . . But I think they all turned out cute!

  69. Lots of quilters used to use this idea to create unique pieces of fabric but they discovered that it really weakens the fabric long-term. As for kids' tees, I doubt that they would be wearing them long enough to matter

  72. Within 5 minutes of reading this post/tutorial I have sprayed my shirt and it is laying outside and I am waiting on it to dry so I can put a little something on the back. I used an olive green shirt with grease stains and I think I might have sprayed to much as the shirt looks almost purple so I need to do it on the back so it can kinda match. What a good way to use the grease stained shirts that I have. I have soooo many of them.
